Trafficking in Humans
People trafficking has become the third biggest source of income for international crime syndicates behind drugs and arms, raking in an estimated 6 billion to 9 billion dollars per year, reports the international edition of The Miami Herald. At a recent press conference in Mexico City, John Miller, the director of the U.S. State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, told reporters that some 17,500 people a year were trafficked into the United States, one third of these coming either from or through Mexico. One out of every 5 children between 11 and 12 years of age has been harassed with sexual insinuations by a stranger while chatting on the Internet, claims a study reported in the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad. According to questionnaires handed out to 660 parents and 220 children between the ages of 8 and 12, more than half the children who use the Internet have had an occasional unpleasant experience by being confronted with irritating mail (spam) or with pornographic images or other inappropriate information. Most of the children reported the encounter to their parents. The study further notes that 8 out of 10 parents are worried about the dangers that their child may face by using the Internet, that nearly half the parents said they would like to give close supervision to their children as they use the Internet, that 60 percent of parents keep the computer in the living room to monitor their children, and that children average nearly an hour a day on the Internet playing games, sending electronic mail, and chatting.

Beware of Noisy Toys
Noisy toys harm kids’ hearing  states the Toronto Star newspaper. After evaluating 40 toys aimed at children under the age of three, a team of Canadian hearing experts found that at least 25 were noisy enough to damage young ears, says the paper. A toy cell phone registered the highest level of sound at 115 decibels. According to audiologist Richard Larocque, that sound level is lower than a jet plane but noisier than most discotheques. The current standard allowed by Health Canada is 100 decibels. The study suggests that a standard of 87 decibels for 30 minutes of exposure would better protect hearing, the article stated.

Difficult Children Can Improve
Many difficult primary school-aged children grow out of their problems, states The Sydney Morning Herald. They can turn into well-adjusted teenagers. Research conducted by the Australian Institute of Family Studies followed the progress of 178 children identified at 11 or 12 years of age as displaying three or more of such characteristics as high aggression, low co-cooperativeness, low self-control, low capacity to stay focused on tasks, high hyperactivity and a volatile or moody temperament. Six years later, 100 of these youths exhibited behavior virtually identical to a control group of more easygoing youngsters. What helped them to improve? Children who turned into happy teenagers were less likely to have kept company with antisocial peers [and] were also more likely to have closer parental supervision, says the report.

Some dogs that have been household pets for more than a year can foresee epileptic attacks in the children with whom they live, reports the Spanish newspaper Diario Medico. Researchers reached this conclusion after carrying out a study of 45 families. Several parents with epileptic children noticed that prior to an attack, their dog began to behave in a peculiar way. It would force the young one to sit down or would lean against the child’s side so that if he fell, the dog would break his fall.

American children and adolescents today are the most brand-oriented, consumer-involved and materialistic generation in history,î says Juliet Schor, a Boston College sociologist who has studied the impact of consumerism on children. Weaning Children Off TV
In a five-month study involving 16 upstate New York preschools, it was found that giving children simple lessons on alternatives to TV reduced their viewing time by three hours a week, reports The New York Times. The lessons promoted reading and such activities as making place mats for family meals and No TV signs for each TV set in the home. The children themselves also suggested other things to do when not watching TV or videos. Parents were encouraged to read stories to their children daily and to turn the TV off during meals. Twice during the study, families left the TV off for a week. Landmines, says the report, are an insidious legacy of that conflict that maim and kill Mozambicans to this day, including rural children who were born long after the guns were silenced. The Gambian giant pouched rat, named after the large pouches inside its cheeks for carrying food, is found in much of Africa, is easily tamed, and is a favorite pet.

Stressed Caregivers
According to a Statistics Canada study, three in 10 people aged 45 to 64 must tend to an elderly relative in need of care while also caring for children under 25 and in many cases balancing a full-time job as well, says the National Post newspaper of Canada. The study found that of people caring for the elderly while also raising children, there is a higher rate of depression among women than among men. Working women devote about 29 hours a month to elder care compared with some 13 hours a month by their male counterparts. Women are also more likely to do more nurturing, such as cooking for and bathing the elderly. Over half the survey respondents felt that they would do a better job if they could get a break every now and then, says the Post.

Cell phones and the Internet are a social lifeline for many young people.  They can also be their social death, says Canada’s Maclean’s magazine, since cyberbullies can use E-mail, instant messaging, and cell-phone text messaging to torment victims. A quarter of young Canadian Internet users report having received material that said hateful things about others, says Maclean’s. Such electronic bullying has moved police to issue reminders that written death threats are a crime. Maclean’s advises parents to talk to their children about the people and places they visit on-line and to put computers in an open area of the home where it is easy to monitor what children are reading and sending. The report warns children never to respond to a bully’s message and never to give out their log-in codes or passwords to others, even their best buddies, in order to prevent their private information from being passed on to others.

Of course, you have to spend a certain amount to make your baby shower party successful. You have to spend for food and drinks, and prizes if you are planning to have games. There are many ways to maximize your budget without compromising the fun of the party. After all, baby showers are not considered to be that expensive. Just spend wisely to avoid hurting your wallet.

Make a List of Your Guests

Listing your guests determines how much to spend on food and beverages. Usually, the mom-to-be only invites the closest relatives and the closest friends. This way, the mother-to-be can entertain all the guests during the party without having to strain herself.

Stay at Home or Choose a Venue

The common practice is to hold the party at the house of the mother-to-be. But if you think your place cannot hold too many guests, you can rent a venue. If that is so, you must allocate a budget for it too. By this time you should already have a list of your guests so you already have the idea how big the place should be.

Bring a Unique and Useful Gift

Offering a unique gift is the best thing that you can do to make the event more memorable. There are lots of items to choose from. If you have no idea, you can ask the parents-to-be about their wish list. The most common items are blankets, baby bottles, night sacks and caps, baby photo-frames just to name a few. Consumable gifts such as diapers are useful too but they do not last for long. Look for something that the baby can use for a long time.

You can offer grooming sets that include baby powder, baby bath soap, baby lotion and baby cologne. You may also go for items to be placed in the crib such as stuffed animals, toy blocks, picture frames, musical toys, and the like.

Gifts for new moms and experienced moms are different from each other. Just think about what the mother needs and you will never go wrong in choosing your gift. You may also offer some gifts for the daddy and the mommy.

Don’t be a Drag – Participate in Games

If the host of the party has prepared some games, take the initiative to participate. Everybody’s participation is expected because if no one will join, the party will simply be lifeless. Remember, a party is supposed to be fun. Therefore, get a little bit informal and enjoy the party.

Like me, you might view such things with skepticism. You might see them a little like a pageant or beauty contests where you are subjecting your pride and joy to cynicism or ridicule. But I have discovered that it really isn’t the case at all.

Taking their cute pictures is a lot of fun and quite unpredictable at times. The most surprising part of it all is that the best pictures are the candid ones that I didn’t stage or try too hard at and they got the most votes. It is a great had regardless.

I stated with entering my pets and thought why not enter my kid’s cute pics. The prize money was greater – about $5,000 was awarded every month for the cutest kid photo and there was an opportunity to enter the Grand prize Contest for $25,000 for the kid voted the cutest kid for 2012. I started taking what seemed like a million pictures (thank goodness for digital cameras) and my kids started “Hamming it up” so I had to get them to tone it down. We sure had some fun and everyone got involved….even my husband. I registered and entered and the bonuses where great too. When we started to win some prizes. We haven’t won the big monthly prize yet but we did come close a few times. I guess i just have to get a little better at taking a good picture. That’s what it really boils down to. Kids are naturally cute and you can’t really take a bad picture but there are other mothers trying hard to do the same thing. The kids love the whole process though. The joy on the kids faces when we get into the top 10 is a magical moment. They are overjoyed. The cash prize would come in handy….I’ll be honest.

Another surprising thing that I didn’t really think about or expect was how the kids started getting growing in self esteem. they care more about their appearance and I didn’t have to force them to get dressed the right way and wear the right things. They would critique themselves on what to wear and whether this looked good with that. It was truly surprising and has given me a lot to think about the importance of building your child’s self image. Training that my parents did not really think about and to be quite honest neither did I until I started entering my kids into “thecutekid” contest.

Some people register and enter their kids in “thecutekid” contest because they want to give their children great exposure for a possible future in the entertainment industry or a commercial modeling career. It is one of the most famous and popular places for industry professionals to look for the next child star. For me though, it is more about bonding with my kids with something they are really interested in and building memories with them that we can always laugh about when they grow up. I can’t recommend the “thecutekid” contest enough.
